Users Coming Off Weight-Loss Injections Regain Pounds Four Times Faster Than Those on Conventional Diets
Fresh analysis suggests that people who stop using popular GLP-1 drugs like Mounjaro or Wegovy tend to recover reduced body mass at a significantly accelerated pace than those who halt conventional diet and exercise plans.
Published data in a major health publication demonstrates that while overweight individuals frequently drop about a fifth of their body weight while on the medication, the mass returns at an estimated rate of 0.8 kg per month upon discontinuation.
"Individuals using these medications need to be informed of the potential of fast rebound weight gain when the treatment ends," stated researcher Dr. Susan Jebb.
This pace of recovery means a return to original mass within about one and a half years.
Weighing Treatments
The study, which looked at dozens of trials involving thousands of participants, compared the results of these new drugs with conventional dieting.
The team point out that people who lose weight through lifestyle changes alone generally experience a more gradual weight regain—around 0.1 kg a month—once they finish.
The Reason for the Fast Rebound
Doctors believe the way of the jabs accounts for the heightened rebound.
These medications imitate a body's own chemical called glucagon-like peptide-1, which controls feelings of fullness.
"Long-term administration of the hormone levels several times higher than the body's typical production could lead to the system to generate a reduced amount of its own natural hormone, and may also diminish sensitivity to its actions," explained Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition specialist.
"Withdrawal of this GLP-1 'fix' means hunger is uncontrolled, making excessive eating far more likely."
A Chronic Issue?
The NHS recommend the jabs for people with obesity-related health risks, alongside recommended diet and exercise modifications.
Professionals say that, given the significant potential of relapse, the therapy might need to be ongoing.
This perspective is supported by drug manufacturers, who state that the findings "emphasize the long-term character of obesity," similar to managing diseases like hypertension.
User Accounts
Individuals who have come off the medication report a intense return of appetite.
"It felt as if something flipping and you become ravenous," said one woman.
This challenge is worsened if users have not adopted permanent lifestyle or habit changes during treatment.
Widespread Use
Figures suggest that millions of people in the UK have used weight-loss jabs in the last 12 months, with demand being substantial.
- Adoption is greater among women than males.
- The 40s and 50s age group shows the highest usage rates.
- A large proportion obtain the drugs through private prescriptions rather than public health services.
Finally, researchers caution that while the jabs are powerful tools for shedding pounds, they are not a permanent fix and maintained weight loss hinges on combined behavioural changes.
